This was all so different to what I’d planned when I decided to find my soul mate. I knew the magic would work, but magic could be a bit temperamental at the best of times when it was cast by an omega. So, there was a little doubt in my mind at all times, wondering whether or not anything real would come from it.

Ozul was as real as it came. He wasn’t how I imagined a vampire, or even how I imagined my soul mate to be. I wondered if there would ever be a time when we would’ve met organically. That were plenty of popularized saying about how you were supposed to come into contact at least once with your soul mate, so trying to think about when that might be was always on my mind.

Alongside the introduction of his new rules. I wasn’t allowed to talk to his human help, or actually any of the other vampires in the coven. I didn’t want to tell him what it was, but his behavior was awfully close to a physical rut at this point.

As we arrived at the restaurant, we entered through the front and I finally got to see the place. There wasn’t anyone there. It looked like any other fast food place with the neon lights and sterile bright white tile flooring that seemed to burn your eyes if you stared at it for too long.

“Any other rules?” I asked, scanning the walls and posters. “Do people know this is for vampires?”

“Some do,” he said.

“So some people don’t know?”

“Most people don’t know,” he said, wrapping an arm around me to lead me. “The humans who know, like to keep this place a secret. It works in our favor.”

“But like—like what keeps the vamps from killing and drinking the humans?”

“Rules,” he chuckled.

“You like your rules, huh?” I had to admit, I liked rules too. Rules made the world go around. “Are there any other rules?” I asked again.

He locked eyes with me, his intense gaze, like he was trying to transfer knowledge somehow. “Don’t talk to the other vampires, always wear your ring, and—”

“I haven’t really ever had a job like this before,” I admitted. “So, like I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.”

“I just want you to make that chili,” he said, kissing my forehead. “That’s all. You technically don’t work here. I won’t let you. If we really are soul mates, then I don’t want to share you with the world. But I want to give them a taste of your food.” Ozul led me through to a large pantry and refrigerated food section at the back. This was where I could find all the fresh ingredients I needed to make chili. “But before you get to it, you should call home and tell them what you think, and how long you might be staying.”

He’d given me a lot to think about. I didn’t know how long I wanted to stay here around all of this.
